When in Turin

Lombroso’s Museum of Criminal Anthropology is an Italian museum created by Cesare Lombroso, a criminologist who was obsessed with the theory that deviant and criminal behaviours were affected by the size and shape of a person’s skull.

Fittingly, the creepiest and most notorious attraction in this museum is Lombroso’s impressive collection of over 400 human skulls. On display are the skulls of civilians, soldiers, and criminals. The centrepiece to the display is Lombroso’s own severed head, which he bizarrely donated after his own death.

In addition to the skull exhibit, the museum also features actual murder weapons, death masks, deranged artworks, the literal brains of serial killers, and graphic photos of crime scenes. Definitely not a place for children.

4. The Museum of Legendary Creatures

Located in Paris, the Museum of Legendary Creatures is dedicated to all things creepy and supernatural. This highly exclusive museum was founded by Jacques Sirgent, a French historian and scholar on demonology and the occult. Sirgent’s passion for the paranormal drove him to spend decades collecting the rare occult items that are displayed inside the museum.

The first thing visitors notice is that the entrance looks like an elaborate haunted house. The garden, meanwhile, resembles a spooky graveyard, and contains a mummified cat for extra creepiness.

Inside, visitors will find scores of ancient arcane books devoted to the supernatural. They can also peruse thousands of vampire-related artefacts, including weapons, ritualistic objects, and scrolls and texts detailing centuries worth of lore, myths, and superstitions.

Combine this with an extensive assortment of horror movie props and creepy pop culture items. Whichever way you spin it, the Museum of Legendary Creatures is the definitive destination for paranormal enthusiasts.

3. The Mütter Museum

Like the Musee Museum, Philadelphia’s Mütter Museum is famous for its robust collection of strange medical specimens. It first opened in 1958 and is now run by Philadelphia’s College of Physicians, who aim to educate the public about the darker aspects of medical history.

The Mütter Museum contains everything you’d expect to find in a medical museum, like medical instruments and anatomical specimens, but it also contains some grotesque and downright squirm-inducing horrors. For instance, there’s the wall made out of 140 human skulls. Then there’s ‘The Soap Lady’, a woman who died of yellow fever and was later found encased within a mysterious gelatinous substance.

Other creepy attractions include a piece of Einstein’s brain, a Civil War amputation kit, a former president’s malignant tumour, a clogged nine-foot-long colon, the conjoined liver from a pair of Siamese twins, and a wax model of a woman with a horn protruding from her forehead.

Visitors to the Mütter Museum find themselves fascinated and horrified in equal measures. This strange and eerie wonder is definitely worth a visit – provided you have a strong stomach.

2. The Catacombs of Capuchins

Ancient Origins

The Catacombs of Palermo is an ancient burial site that has been transformed into a museum. Located in the southern part of Italy, the area originally served as a cemetery in the sixteenth century.

The catacombs comprise a series of maze-like interconnected tunnels and chambers. The dead are segregated by class and status, with men, women and children, priests, monks, professors, and even virgins all placed in their own respective areas.

The 8,000 bodies on display have been preserved at great expense through mummification. Needless to say, exploring the catacombs is a deeply unnerving experience. These mummies’ gaping mouths and empty eye sockets seem to taunt visitors as they pass through the dimly lit catacombs.

There have been multiple reports of spirit sightings and visitors fainting. In short: this is definitely not the museum to visit if you’re prone to nightmares.

The New England Centre for Psychic Research is the largest occult museum in the world – and the most high-profile. This invitation-only museum is located beneath the Connecticut home of famed paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren – the real-life duo behind the infamous Amityville Horror case.

Ed and Lorraine Warren have investigated and battled the supernatural since the early 1950s. In that time, they have amassed thousands of dark and sinister relics, which they keep strictly protected inside a sealed glass cage in their basement museum.

These thousands of dangerous artefacts include a satanic idol found deep within the Connecticut woods, a mirror used for summoning malevolent spirits, a cursed organ that plays by itself, and the notorious ‘Annabelle’ doll from the popular movie.

There are also deadly masks, cursed items from ancient African and Egyptian ruins, Voodoo items, and a whole swarm of possessed toys and animals. Extreme caution should be exercised if you ever find yourself at the New England Centre for Psychic Research.
